Sweet Summer Suppers

Yippee, we picked our first homegrown tomato out of the garden last week. And I’m glad to report the flavor was worth the wait. Now I’m looking forward to the perfect Southern supper—sliced tomatoes, fried okra, cornbread, and a big pot of ham hock seasoned pinto beans. Some folks add green onions or homemade chow-chow on the side, but not me. Why mess with perfection? So go simple and garden fresh this summer.

No garden and don’t like to cook? No problem. Shop a local farmers’ market and fire up the grill. Hickory smoked fruit and vegetables are easy and sure to please family and friends. Just remind them to thank the cook, say grace, and sit six feet apart.

What’s your favorite summer meal?
