Here lately I’ve found myself in the mood for an afternoon nap more often than usual. Blame it on the cooler weather, shorter days, whatever, but come late afternoon my eyelids droop and my head nods. When I carpooled to work, a ten minute power nap coming and going fit into my schedule perfectly—but only on days I didn’t drive. Weekend naps are golden moments I always enjoy. My love of naps began as a child when my mother enticed me and my sister to join her afternoon “quiet time” by reading us a book. The trick worked on me, not so much on my sister. As an added bonus, my mother’s need for a few moments of rest encouraged my life-long love of reading.
Yes, a little down time benefits everyone. Genesis 2:2-3 says even God took a break. “On the seventh day God had finished his work of creation, so he rested from all his work. And God blessed the seventh day and declared it holy, because it was the day when he rested from all his work of creation.”
What are your thoughts on the occasional nap? For or against it?
