I Can Only Imagine

Have you ever been above the clouds at sunrise? Amazing how a small oval plane window gives you such a grand view. Even a sunset person like me agreed it was worth a few less hours of sleep. Despite the plane engine roar and the crying baby two seats back, the peaceful and welcoming scene outside the window overrode the inside noise and made me smile. What an awesome sight. Something like I imagine when I think of heaven.

That thought is the basis of one of my favorite songs, “I Can Only Imagine,” by Bart Millard. Based on my friend Julia McClanahan’s recommendation, we saw the movie I Can Only Imagine the other day about Bart and his reason for writing the song. The movie is a must-see for fans of the song and band MercyMe. Here’s a hint without giving away the ending: take plenty of Kleenex. But I left the theater with a smile because the movie reminded me of that sunrise I saw above the clouds. And the clouds made me think of Matthew 24:30. “They will see the Son of Man [Jesus] coming on the clouds of the sky, with power and great glory.” No imagination will be needed on that day. Everyone will see him.

Now it’s your turn on this Southern-fried Friday. What’s the most spectacular or weird thing you’ve seen on a plane?
