When your cats classify everything inside your home a toy, you learn to live without a few items. All houseplants disappeared one way or another, as in shredded or removed before being shredded. Fast forward to last year when it was safe to get back into indoor gardening and I received a potted orchid. To my delight, the plant flowered all summer and rebloomed in the winter. To my surprise, a keiki appeared in the spring. Keiki is Hawaiian for baby and pronounced Kay-Key. When the keiki grew to the appropriate size, I detached it from the mother and repotted the duo. Six months later I’m overjoyed to possess two healthy houseplants for the first time in many years.
