Fruitcake—love it or leave it, right? This time of year the number of fruitcake jokes I hear rivals the abundance of wacky Christmas sweaters I see. One originates with the Romans, and the other came from who knows where. Maybe you’re blessed to be a lover of both. My preference is fruitcake, especially the type my grandmother used to make each Christmas and gave us as a present. Mixed with love, loaded with nuts and whole candied cherries, the moist cake was one of my favorite Christmas treats. Yes, an earth-shaking statement from a chocoholic like me, but sometimes you make exceptions, especially for someone you love.
