If you’re looking for a sign of spring, crocuses popping up and showing off their color might be the first one. A few days of sunshine and above average February temperatures in the south bring them out everywhere but the shady side of the yard. In the language of flowers, crocus means cheerfulness, and I understand why. After several months of winter, their colorfulness makes me smile.
In case you didn’t know—crocuses are a member of the iris family and native to the Alps, southern Europe, and the Mediterranean area. Meaning our ancestors brought them across the Atlantic when they came to America. And every year about this time, I’m so glad they packed a few crocus corms in their baggage and spread cheerfulness everywhere they settled.
