After a few mishaps this month, I decided to share my lessons learned. Lesson one—cooking a lot of bacon produces a whole bunch of grease, and spilling some of it on your kitchen rug creates a gigantic mess. Despite blotting the greasy area with a wad of paper towels, a large dark spot remained on the rug. Then I discovered the magic of corn starch extends way beyond gravy and soup recipes. I sprinkled a thick layer of the white powder onto the spot, vacuumed it up twenty-four hours later, and erased all evidence of my kitchen calamity. Yippee! But wait, my next mini-disaster tops this one.
Lesson two—when you unknowingly step on a glue trap intended to catch mice, your shoe gains an additional sole requiring the strength of Hercules to remove it. If the misstep occurs in the garden section of a big box store, you hobble to your car and listen to your husband laugh all the way home. Can you guess what removed the super sticky substance from my shoe? Yep, another kitchen staple, olive oil. While the process required disposable gloves and patience, thank goodness the outcome prevents me from sticking to the floor and leaving behind gummy footprints.
These alternative uses of kitchen ingredients conclude my public service announcement for the month. Please feel free to share your innovative use of common household items in the comment section below. My current track record leads me to believe I’ll benefit from them in the near future.
