Sunny skies and pleasant temperatures lured me outside every day this week. After a sizzling hot summer, I welcomed fall in the south—until an acorn dropped on my head, followed by another one in a matter of minutes. I admit life in the woods possesses a few hazards. Based on the size of my assailants, I also predict the squirrels and deer will be fat and happy this winter. But did you know people have been eating acorns for thousands of years? With oak trees growing on most continents, acorns provide a free and nutritious source of vitamins and minerals for all creatures great and small. Just be aware humans should not eat them green or raw. Boil or soak them before chowing down.
If you’ve eaten an acorn, how do they taste? For everyone else, what’s your favorite nutty snack?
